Traveling with kids has probably been a challenge for parents since the beginning of civilization! Here, we are going to be sharing various tips for parents, and will also be welcoming YOUR suggestions on how you have mastered the art of planning your own vacations with your children, and what strategies have worked for you to make yours a vacation that YOU could enjoy as much as your children did.
Here's an example from our own experiences: When John's daughter was young, we knew we wanted to bring her on as many of our own vacations as was possible. But, being an only child, we also knew that she would probably get bored hanging around only with us. Our solution? We ALWAYS took one of her friends or cousins with us. We knew the parents of her friends, so there was no issue there. All the resorts we went to had plenty of room for a couple of kids!
Some of the preparations we made included:
- We always made sure we had a signed letter from parents allowing us to seek emergency medical care in the event something happened, and also made sure we knew of any potential medical conditions ahead of time.
- We also had signed letters from the parents explaining that their daughter was in our care (making sure that our full names were included in the letter).
- When we went to England, we made sure we had copies of the kids' passports (as well as our own) in a completely different location than where we held the originals.
- We knew the phone numbers of the resorts ahead of time, and made sure that the parents had these numbers.
- We also pre-determined at least the first date and time we would be "calling home." This, of course helped with any separation anxiety that might have occured.
So, as we develop this page, we will be discussing these types of ideas, and much more! Please feel free to send us YOUR ideas about traveling with kids, and stay tuned!
