In & Around Banner Elk, North Carolina

Things to Do and See in Banner Elk, North Carolina

It was fairly cold and rainy during our stay, so we did not venture onto the trails as we had originally intended, but there are lots of trails and waterfalls in the vicinity for walkers and hikers of all abilities. For those familiar with the area, a very popular attraction is Grandfather Mountain, which, at 5,946 feet is the highest point in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and boasts a 228-foot suspension bridge that crosses an 80-foot chasm, as well as hiking trails, a nature museum, and of course, great views. Definitely a great family attraction (weather permitting, that is!).  Their website, where you can get up to date information is www.GrandFather.com.

The rain and cold did not deter us. This was perfect weather to visit Valle Crucis (pronounced "valley crew-sis" and which means "Vale of the Cross" - so named by an 1840s Episcopal bishop, Levi Ives. He noticed that there were three streams in the valley that appeared to be in the shape of a "St. Andrews Cross.").

We could not resist the allure of the Mast General Store, a fixture in the village for well over 100 years. What drew us in was the promise of some old fashioned bluegrass music, and sure enough, we were not disappointed. On the back porch was a group of local musicians who have obviously played music together for many years. It was mesmerizing for us - we listened for as long as we dared to take up seats. Oh, the store is wonderful as well, but for us, it was the music that we remember. As a National Historic Register Community with lovely views and preserved historic buildings, Valle Crucis is well worth the trip.
